Obama is indoctrinating our poor children with leftist propaganda!

Obama is giving a “welcome back to school” speech today, which is apparently is being televised live to kids in schools across the country. Some conservative parents, however, are apparently a bit paranoid that their children might somehow be poisoned by crazy liberal ideas and keeping their kids home from school. Here is the heart of his short little speech, judge for yourself (full transcript here):

But at the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, and the best schools in the world – and none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities. Unless you show up to those schools; pay attention to those teachers; listen to your parents, grandparents and other adults; and put in the hard work it takes to succeed.

And that’s what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education. I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself.

I guess this radical message of self-responsibility and hard-work is simply too much for some people. I think it would truly be a stretch to find any fault in this speech, and its unfortunate that its simple message is being overshadowed by its politicization. I mean who can really disagree with the exhortation for our children to work hard and take responsibility for themselves? I think when people pull out the word “propaganda” or “indoctrination” it’s basically code for “I don’t want my kids to be potentially inspired or moved by a president that I dislike”. Which is fine, but just call it what it is, ok?
